From 15 April 2023, the Farmers’ Market concept will be extended in Birgu, so that the agricultural products of Maltese and Gozitan farmers are brought closer to the people in our villages.
This was announced in a news conference addressed by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo, together with the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli.
Minister Refalo said that the government is committed to continue investing in farmers’ markets by offering a better experience to consumers and visitors to the Farmers’ Market and stated that “Due to the fact that the market that is currently held in Ta Qali’ is well received both by the farmers who sell local products and also by the consumer, now we will be extending this Farmers’ Market in several other localities, so that the local product is closer of the Maltese and Gozitan people.”
Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli praised this initiative and said that it is gratifying to see the local councils giving their contribution in favor of supporting local products. 
“The aim of these markets is to promote sustainable agriculture, support local farmers and provide fresh food to the communities, therefore the secretariat for the local government looks forward to more collaboration between the Maltese Agency for -Food and the local councils.”
This could be done after work by the Surveillance section within the Maltese Food Agency, which works hard every day to strengthen the local product in collaboration with Birgu Local Council.
Minister Refalo, concluded by saying that “The aim of the farmers’ markets is to create a space where the farmer, the villager and the producer of local agricultural products sell directly to the consumer and the families. -its products, thus generating an appropriate and fair profit for the producer and a good price for the consumer. As always as a ministry, we are committed to continuing to see that we have more investments in the farmers’ markets by offering a better experience to the consumer and to the visitors of each Farmers’ Market.”
