Prime Minister Robert Abela meets Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland

On the margins of COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, the Prime Minister of Malta Robert Abela had a bilateral meeting with the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Patricia Scotland.The meeting discussed the fact that Malta was asked by the Commonwealth to serve in the Action Group at a ministerial level within the Commonwealth.

The Prime Minister Robert Abela said that our country is honored to serve actively in this Group which should push forward democratic principles, the protection of human rights and the strengthening in the kingdom of -right.

Both sides spoke on the issue of climate change, with the Maltese Prime Minister pointing out the role and contribution that Malta is giving and committed to continue to give to support islands that are still developing, to welcome – climate change.

Dr Abela said that Malta will continue to share sustainable practices with these islands and stressed that the Commonwealth is an important platform in which small countries can combat climate change.

Here he pointed out how small countries have their own particular impacts from climate change and therefore also need specific solutions.

In the meeting, reference was also made to the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the links she had with Malta, with her last visit being in 2015.
