Vaccination program against COVID-19 among the elderly continues

Around 4,000 residents in nursing homes across Malta and Gozo are being vaccinated with the second dose of the booster this month in order to remain protected against COVID-19.

During a visit to the St. Vincent de Paul Residence, Health Ministers Chris Fearne and Active Aging Minister Jo Etienne Abela attended the vaccination process for the elderly residents of the residence.

The Deputy Prime Minister explained that while restrictive measures have continued to be reduced in recent days, in order for our country to continue to move towards a normal economic, social and cultural life, it is crucial to protect the most vulnerable in the world. society. That is why the health authorities have re-issued the vaccine invitation to around 17,000 elderly people over the age of 80 living in the community, and around 6,000 people suffering from low immunity. While 2,000 elderly people over the age of 80 living in the community who are bed bound will be vaccinated in their own homes with appointments that will begin to be communicated by telephone in the coming days.

Minister Abela praised the efficiency of the vaccination process in old people’s homes, where in a few days the majority of resident elderly are expected to be vaccinated. He said that at the St. Vincent de Paul Residence, about 89% of residents were already vaccinated with the first booster and will be receiving a second booster in the coming days.

Minister Abela urged all seniors to receive the booster invitation to accept so that their immunity can be strengthened.

Deputy Prime Minister Fearne also explained that immediately, at Mater Dei Hospital in the case of mothers who are positive for COVID-19 during the birth process, both naturally and by cesarean section, will be allowed to be accompanied by a person at birth. This is while in the case of the mother’s partner being in quarantine they will be allowed to accompany the mother during the payment process as well, as long as they do not have symptoms of COVID-19.
