COP26, the Climate Summit held in Glasgow, Scotland, has closed with agreement to reduce the use of coal, one of the most harmful fossil fuels.
The deal also presses for more urgent emission cuts and promises more money to help developing countries adapt to climate impacts.
Agreement to “phase down” rather than “phase out” the use of coal after strong objections from India. A compromise that moved COP26 President Alok Sharma to say he was “deeply sorry” for how events had unfolded.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the planet was “hanging by a thread”. “We are still knocking on the door of climate catastrophe… it is time to go into emergency mode – or our chance of reaching net zero will itself be zero.”
