Although the tourism industry is expected to recover from 1 June, the government has announced that it will cancel the payment of licenses and contributions payable to the Malta Tourism Authority for the period between January and December of this year.
The different sectors that will benefit from this measure are hotels, guesthouses, hostels, HFPs, host families, restaurants, bars, travel agents, tourist village, diving, snack bars, take-away, kiosks, watersports, nightclubs , pleasure boats, self-drive, self-drive motorcycle, coaches, minibuses, taxis, garage hire, hotel outlets, souvenir shops, timeshare as well as English schools.
This measure is expected to leave over € 4,000,000 in the pockets of around 10,000 MTA-licensed businesses.
This was announced at a press conference by the Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Clayton Bartolo and the Chairman of the Malta Tourism Authority Gavin Gulia.
Minister Clayton Bartolo stressed that the cancellation of these licenses and contributions goes beyond the incentives that are being announced week after week as part of the recovery plan for tourism.
“This government is ensuring that the local industry gets back on its feet before the first tourists arrive in early June,” said Minister Clayton Bartolo.
Chairman of the Malta Tourism Authority Gavin Gulia said that if there has ever been a time when there is a need to help workers it has been in the last 13 months where The Malta Tourism Authority has seen the provision of various aid schemes for many sectors among those most affected by the pandemic.
