Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo had a virtual meeting with Minister for European Neighborhood and the Americas of the United Kingdom Wendy Morton.
During this meeting the two sides addressed various issues of bilateral importance, including the post-Brexit relationship between Malta and the United Kingdom. In this regard, Minister Bartolo renewed Malta’s commitment toward maintaining the best possible relations with the United Kingdom, both in European fora and beyond.
In this context, the Ministers spoke about the situation of expatriates living, working or studying in Malta or the United Kingdom, and agreed to continue cooperating to safeguard the best interests of their citizens.
The two sides also agreed to continue building on the strong cooperation between the two countries in the fight against organized crime, money laundering and terrorist financing.
Similarly, they pledged to continue working together to strengthen press freedom, with Minister Bartolo informing Minister Morton that Malta will formally join the Media Freedom Coalition.
With reference to the COVID-19 pandemic, the two sides agreed to sustain cooperation to overcome the challenges it posed, both medically and economically. In this regard, the Ministers also spoke about the possibility for the two countries to collaborate and explore new trade opportunities and niches, particularly in Africa.
