Parks Malta started a green project in the Belvedere area, where several plants were planted in Triq Wied iż-Żurrieq. The selected plants complement the ecosystem found in this area and the environment that this area offers.
During a visit by the Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli, together with the Director-General of Parks Malta Adrian Attard and the Mayor of Żurrieq Rita Grima, it was explained that hundreds of Carissa Macrocarpa were planted along the 700 meters of the Belvedere. This plant can adapt well to the winds that affect the area due to its proximity to the sea. Moreover, this flower-plant tolerates salts as well as the high and low temperatures which dominate the area.
“More people are looking for recreational areas, and so it is our commitment to continue to improve more open spaces around the Maltese islands. Parks Malta’s vision is clear: to have more recreation areas and open spaces, including valleys. Our work goes beyond this, we also want to ensure that such areas are kept clean while enhancing biodiversity”, said Minister Miriam Dalli.
The minister also appealed to the general public to keep the environment clean and avoid dumping waste illegally. During the wet season when fewer people make use of the valleys, Parks Malta collected over 67,000 tonnes of waste in just three months from seven different valleys. Miriam Dalli highlighted that the Ministry for Energy, Enterprise, and Sustainable Development is committed to continue investing and working for the benefit of citizens and future generations.
Adrian Attard described this project in the south of Malta as a demonstration of Parks Malta’s commitment to further enhance the countryside by regenerating valleys and recreational areas under its responsibility and enriching the Maltese environment with additional projects.
Mayor of Żurrieq Rita Grima explained that Triq Wied iż-Żurrieq is one of the busiest streets in the locality, popular with locals and anyone who frequents the area. She thanked the ministry and Parks Malta for their commitment to implementing similar initiatives to be enjoyed by the general public.
