Malta\u2019s traditional crafts could benefit from stronger protection, greater recognition and new business opportunities under a European Union scheme aimed at safeguarding products linked to their geographical origins. The opportunities were highlighted during an information session organised by MEP Peter Agius, bringing Maltese artisans face to face with European experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the crafts discussed was the traditional Maltese Lira Clock, which is already at an advanced stage in the process of obtaining European recognition and has benefited from financial assistance from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The session, entitled \u201cUnderstanding the EU Framework for Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products (CIGIs)\u201d, brought together craftspeople specialising in lace-making, filigree, Lira Clock making and weaving, alongside representatives of the European Commission, EUIPO and the Maltese Crafts Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new European framework extends geographical indication protection to craft and industrial products whose reputation, quality or distinctive characteristics are linked to their place of origin. It offers producers an opportunity to protect authentic products against imitations, preserve traditional skills and strengthen their position in European markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MEP Agius stressed that Maltese craftsmanship deserves recognition and protection beyond Malta\u2019s shores. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that local artisans are aware of the opportunities available to them and have the information and support needed to benefit from European initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Registering eligible products under the new framework can help safeguard their identity, distinguish genuine craftsmanship from imitations and give consumers greater confidence in the authenticity and quality of what they purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The session also focused on the practical steps artisans and producers need to take to obtain protection, as well as the financial assistance available to support applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adria Lopez, representing the European Commission\u2019s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW), explained how the new geographical indications framework works and the opportunities it creates for European artisans and manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Elisavet Karagiampi from EUIPO outlined the financial support available through the new CIGI voucher under the SME Fund. She explained the eligibility requirements, the costs covered, the level of assistance available and how businesses can apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Lira Clock provided a concrete example of how Maltese craftsmanship could benefit from the scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Elton Micallef of the Maltese Crafts Foundation outlined the work being undertaken to secure European recognition for this traditional Maltese product. The process has involved several skilled craftspeople specialising in Lira Clock making and has already benefited from financial assistance provided by EUIPO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Malta, where traditional crafts form an important part of the country\u2019s cultural identity and economic heritage, the new framework presents an opportunity to preserve skills passed down through generations while opening doors to new markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By protecting the geographical identity of distinctive Maltese products, the scheme can also help artisans build consumer trust, promote authenticity and compete more effectively beyond the local market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initiative forms part of MEP Agius\u2019s efforts to bring European opportunities closer to Maltese businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, by helping them understand and make use of EU support mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The session concluded with a call for greater awareness of the new scheme and for more Maltese artisans and producers to explore the opportunities for protection, recognition and financial support available at national and European level.<\/p>\n
