Malta is working for continued European action to protect consumers and businesses from rising energy costs, while stepping up efforts to improve energy efficiency and strengthen energy security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Energy Minister Dr Miriam Dalli participated during the Informal Meeting of EU Energy Ministers held in Dublin under the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting brought together EU energy ministers, representatives of the European Commission and invited partners for discussions focused on energy affordability, innovation and market disruption, as well as European energy security and cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minister Dalli stressed that Europe is once again facing a sensitive period for energy markets, against a backdrop of continued geopolitical instability and renewed upward pressure on energy prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have already experienced a number of crises, from Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine to the current situation in the Middle East, which is once again placing upward pressure on energy prices. This means higher costs for electricity and fuels and, consequently, greater pressure on different Member States,\u201d Minister Dalli said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She highlighted that these pressures are particularly significant for island Member States such as Malta and Ireland, where geographic realities can create additional challenges in relation to energy security, connectivity and costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor Malta, our priority remains supporting consumers, households and businesses, particularly our many self-employed and small businesses. However, this does not mean accepting unnecessary energy waste. We will push for greater efficiency in the way we use energy,\u201d Minister Dalli said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Energy affordability formed the focus of the first working session during the meeting, followed by discussions on innovation and disruption in energy markets and on European energy security and cooperation. The informal Council is intended to support strategic exchanges ahead of the formal Energy Council meetings later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minister Dalli said Malta will continue advocating for European measures that reflect the different circumstances of Member States, including the particular realities faced by island countries, while supporting investment in cleaner energy, greater efficiency and stronger energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt a time when energy prices are again under pressure, we need to look at what measures can be taken at European level to support Member States, consumers and businesses, while continuing the transition towards a more efficient, secure and sustainable energy system,\u201d Minister Dalli concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
