Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health, Ian Borg visited Mater Dei Hospital, where he met 65 newly qualified nurses and 12 newly qualified midwives who are beginning their professional careers at the hospital. During the visit, he also met the management team and the professionals responsible for their training and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new nurses successfully completed their studies at the University of Malta or MCAST. Before taking up their duties in their respective clinical areas, they are undertaking an induction programme led by the Clinical Education Team. This is followed by training tailored to their roles, while guidance, mentoring and professional support continue throughout their first year. Meanwhile, the new midwives have completed a four-year degree programme and will undertake a structured two-year programme involving placements across maternity wards and specialised units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that investment in professionals and continued renewal are essential to translating improvements in healthcare into better patient care. He also encouraged more young people to pursue a career in a sector that supports people from all walks of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs we continue to invest in infrastructure and introduce important changes and reforms, we must also keep investing in the professionals and workers in this sector, which is so vital to the people of Malta and Gozo. This investment must reach everyone, including doctors, consultants, nurses and midwives who, after years of study, are now beginning a professional life dedicated to patients in our hospital. It was a pleasure to meet them and those guiding them through this important step. I encourage many others to follow in their footsteps, and we wish them every success,\u201d said Dr Borg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chief Midwifery Manager Charmaine Psaila explained that the work of midwives extends beyond childbirth, covering different stages of a woman\u2019s life and providing support to families. \u201cMidwives provide care and support before pregnancy, throughout pregnancy and childbirth, and after birth, as well as in women\u2019s health. Our work also takes into account the social needs that may affect pregnancy and family life. We support people experiencing difficulties having children through the ART Clinic, as well as women who sadly experience the loss of their baby. I encourage more people to pursue this much-needed course as we continue to expand our services,\u201d said Psaila.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Head of Nursing Dr Victoria Sultana highlighted how the enthusiasm of these new professionals further strengthens the care and services provided. She also reaffirmed her commitment, and that of the entire team, to providing the support needed to give those embarking on this journey the best possible start. \u201cThis is a wonderful time for us as we welcome new nurses and midwives who bring so much energy. We encourage them to maintain this enthusiasm throughout their careers, in their work with patients and everyone who needs our services. Despite the challenges, we always place the patient at the centre of everything we do, and this work gives us great satisfaction. For our part, we will do everything possible to help our new professionals find their feet and grow in their careers,\u201d concluded Dr Sultana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
