An annual event organised by the National Mental Health Services under the patronage of the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, was held at Sant\u2019Anton Palace to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. During the event, the President was also presented with the National Mental Health Services\u2019 Calendar of Activities, which includes initiatives to raise awareness and strengthen suicide prevention throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event highlighted progress in implementing the first National Suicide Prevention Strategy for 2026\u20132031, launched in March. Its priorities include professional training, public awareness, safer environments and continuity of care following periods of difficulty or discharge from hospital, through collaboration between services and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Myriam Spiteri Debono spoke about the importance of promoting better mental health through a holistic approach, while continuing to tackle stigma, silence, shame, prejudice and the fear of being judged, which can prevent people from seeking help through the services available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her Excellency acknowledged the work of the National Mental Health Services and their professionals, calling for a strong, coordinated response from governmental and non-governmental organisations to ensure these efforts are effective and reach those who need support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Ian Borg highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen mental health services, including the development of the Acute Psychiatric Care Centre at Mater Dei Hospital and the refurbishment of additional wards at Mount Carmel Hospital. He linked this investment to the need to ensure that people in crisis have access to care and that professionals receive the support they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDuring my first months in this role, I have come to appreciate even more deeply the dedication of our professionals. Suicide prevention requires us to continue supporting them and ensuring that those who need help receive it when they need it,\u201d said the Deputy Prime Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chief Executive Officer of the National Mental Health Services, Roseanne Camilleri, explained that the calendar includes a wide range of activities spread across different days and locations to reach as many people as possible. \u201cOur commitment is to bring services closer to people and work with the community so that those who are struggling receive the support they need, while raising greater awareness of mental health,\u201d said Camilleri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clinical Chairperson Professor Anton Grech delivered a message of hope, emphasising that mental illness can be treated. He encouraged anyone who is struggling to find the courage to seek help stating that \u201cListening attentively and providing professional help are essential to ensuring that people receive the support they need throughout their journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event also highlighted the need to speak and act with sensitivity. Distress is not always visible, zwhich is why we must create spaces where people can talk about their thoughts and the challenges they face without fear of being judged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
