Following the introduction of free insulin pumps for children and young people with diabetes earlier this year, the Ministry for Health is now providing them with additional resources to help them manage this treatment more comfortably, particularly during the summer months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Ian Borg announced that those born in 2007 and later, with type 1 diabetes, as well as patients who develop diabetes following pancreatic removal surgery, will now start receiving additional infusion sets and cartridges (consumables) needed to use their insulin pumps more comfortably, even in summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through this additional investment, these young people will be able to manage their treatment more effectively, since during the summer months insulin pump consumables often need to be replaced more frequently. This will provide them with greater peace of mind while helping them to enjoy summer with less difficulties, particularly swimming. They are also being provided with water-resistant dressings to further support their treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Deputy Prime Minister said that this support will further improve the quality of life of people living with type 1 diabetes. \u201cFollowing the introduction of free insulin pumps, the health authorities continued monitoring the wellbeing of these children and young people. From the feedback we received, we recognised the need to provide them with additional resources to help them cope better with summer conditions,\u201d Dr Borg explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis process of continuous improvement is essential if we are to provide better health services. It is a process that requires collaboration between all those involved in this field, not least those receiving the treatments and services we provide \u2013 such collaboration benefits everyone,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
M\u2019Claire Catanzaro, a Paediatric Practice Nurse, emphasised that these changes are making a tangible difference in the lives of these children and young people. \u201cThis pump makes a significant difference because, whereas previously children had to inject themselves multiple times a day, this device will not only reduce discomfort but will also give them greater freedom and flexibility in their daily lives,\u201d Catanzaro explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In February 2026, the Government announced free insulin pumps and related consumables to people born in 2007 and later, with type 1 diabetes, as well as to patients who develop diabetes following pancreatic removal surgery. Two insulin pump clinics were also opened at the \u010aensu Moran Regional Health Centre, in Paola, and the Gozo General Hospital, in Victoria, to provide these patients with the necessary support. The Ministry for Health also launched a 24-hour telephone technical helpline, allowing patients to speak to nurses and doctors who are specially trained in this field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
