In this context, he referred to the Government’s political commitment to support an aftercare programme for young people who turn 18 and no longer live in an institution for adolescents.

Through this programme, these young people will be guaranteed access to education and training, immediate shelter and financial support. The Prime Minister emphasised that this support can make a concrete difference in the lives of people who have gone through difficult and traumatic experiences. He described this measure of the Government’s work programme, for which there is a strong mandate from the people, as an important one in the social work carried out by the State.

Dr Abela spoke to professionals who help these young people build their lives. Many of the young people work and study to gain more independence and the professionals together with the leadership of the Sebħ Foundation described the support from the State together with the Church and benefactors as valuable in helping the residents.

The Manor, formerly known as Dar Fatima, offers a home-like environment where residents live more independently, while still receiving the support of social professionals. Residents are helped to move on with their lives and gain their independence, including becoming homeowners. There are currently seven residents living at The Manor in Sliema.

The Government has an agreement with Fondazzjoni Sebħ so that the residence can continue to operate among other services provided by this Church Foundation. This year the Government is investing €28.4 million in public social agreements with organisations to offer social services, almost €3 million more than last year.

Photos (OPM)

<g transform="translate(0,332) scale(0.1,-0.1)" fill="" stroke="none"></g>

Prime Minister Robert Abela visited The Manor in Sliema, a residence run by the Sebħ Foundation which offers an aftercare service to young people and adults who have lived in residential care and who are making the step towards a more independent life.
