Prime Minister Robert Abela, together with Ministers Michael Falzon, Byron Camilleri, Miriam Dalli and Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, attended the opening of the 16th edition of the BOV Volleyball Marathon in aid of Dar tal-Providenza. This 53-hour event brought together a large number of athletes and volunteers for a noble cause. Dr Abela praised the strong sense of volunteerism that characterises this marathon, as well as the use of sport as a means to promote a healthy lifestyle and, at the same time, to deliver a just cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this context, the Prime Minister recalled that Parliament had approved two important laws, namely the Personal Autonomy Act and the Protection of Vulnerable Adults Act. He announced that today these laws will come into effect in favour of persons with disabilities and vulnerable adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regarding the Personal Autonomy Act, the Prime Minister explained that the changes are built on the principle that no one should make decisions on behalf of another person, unless it is totally impossible for them to decide. \u201cThe greatest thing we can give to people with disabilities is to give them autonomy. Wherever possible this law will ensure that they have the right to autonomy in life,\u201d said Prime Minister Robert Abela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through supported decision-making, a person in need of assistance can receive the necessary support while continuing to enjoy their personal autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Prime Minister also announced that the Protection of Vulnerable Adults Act has come into force. This will facilitate the provision of assistance when a vulnerable adult, including the elderly or adults with a disability, has the protection of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Abela stated that the entry into force of these two laws marks another important step in the work of this Government in favour of the disability sector. At the same time, the application of these two laws continues to demonstrate the political will that the Government has to fulfil what it promised to deliver in the first hundred days of this administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He thanked the athletes, volunteers, workers and the management of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, led by Fr Martin Micallef, for the great service they provide to persons with disability and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prime Minister Robert Abela also presented a donation of \u20ac20,000 from the Social Causes Fund to continue to support the important work carried out at Dar tal-Providenza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
