The patrol boat\u00a0Al Kifah<\/em>\u00a0was recently returned to the Libyan authorities following repair works carried out in Malta. The vessel is operated by the Libyan Coast Guard. This initiative further reinforces cooperation between the two countries in their efforts to combat human trafficking.<\/p>\n

Addressing the ceremony during which\u00a0Al Kifah<\/em>\u00a0was formally handed back to the Libyan authorities, Minister for Home Affairs and Security Glenn Bedingfield, described the handover as an important milestone in the longstanding relationship between Malta and Libya. He highlighted the shared commitment of both countries to ensuring security and stability across the Mediterranean region.<\/p>\n

The Minister noted that cooperation between Malta and Libya has delivered tangible results in recent years, particularly in efforts to combat human trafficking and reduce irregular migration along the Central Mediterranean route.<\/p>\n

He said that the decline in irregular arrivals demonstrates the importance of coordinated action and close collaboration between countries facing common challenges.<\/p>\n

While acknowledging the progress achieved, Minister Bedingfield stressed that further efforts are required to strengthen border controls, enhance cooperation between law enforcement authorities and intensify action against networks involved in human trafficking and the facilitation of irregular migration.<\/p>\n

Referring to the\u00a0Al Kifah<\/em>, the Minister said that this investment reflects Malta\u2019s commitment to maritime security and its practical support in maintaining operational capabilities across the Central Mediterranean. However, he emphasised that border security measures alone cannot resolve migration challenges and argued that greater attention must be given to addressing the root causes that compel people to leave their countries and undertake dangerous journeys.<\/p>\n

The Minister reiterated Malta\u2019s position that prevention should remain at the heart of migration policy and stressed the need for a clear and consistent message that irregular migration is not a viable pathway.<\/p>\n

He also reaffirmed Malta\u2019s role as a neutral country serving as a bridge between Europe and North Africa, promoting dialogue, stability and economic cooperation across the region.<\/p>\n
