New EU rules on migration become applicable today, following the adoption by the EU of the Pact on Migration and Asylum back in 2024.<\/p>\n

The Pact on Migration and Asylum establishes a new framework for the management of migration and asylum in the EU, including rules on the screening of third-country nationals at the external borders, reception conditions, asylum procedures, responsibility and solidarity between member states, and crisis situations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe entry into force of the Pact is a significant step towards a more structured, predictable and fair EU migration system,\u201d said MEP Alex Agius Saliba, Head of the Maltese delegation for the S&D group in the European Parliament. “For Malta, this offers greater clarity, strengthened solidarity mechanisms, and recognition of the realities faced by frontline Member States. However, its success depends on credible implementation, particularly on returns and a stronger external dimension, if we are to achieve a tangible and sustainable reduction in irregular migration.”<\/p>\n
