Applications open for temporary lease of agricultural land to farmers and youth<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo announced the launch of a scheme run by Agricultural Resources Malta (RAM) through which applications will be opened for the temporary lease of agricultural land over a period of three years to farmers in Categories 3, 4 and 5, as well as to young farmers.<\/p>\n

This scheme aims to provide a structured framework for agricultural land that is temporarily transferred to RAM to be allocated in a fair and transparent manner, in order to ensure sustainable and productive use of agricultural resources in Malta.<\/p>\n

The scheme is open to registered farmers falling under Categories 3, 4 and 5, as well as young farmers under the age of 41 who are actively involved in the agricultural sector. Eligible applicants can apply to lease agricultural land managed by RAM for a period of three years, on the condition that it is used exclusively for the cultivation of food crops.<\/p>\n

Rental rates are set in accordance with the Agricultural Land Valuation Regulations, while applications will be evaluated through a points system based on clear criteria. These include the applicant’s experience, the proximity of their agricultural activity to the requested land, the quality and feasibility of the cultivation plan, as well as the adoption of sustainable environmental practices.<\/p>\n

Each applicant must submit a separate application for each plot of land they are interested in. In the event of a tie between applicants, priority will be given according to the level of local agricultural activity, the size of the agricultural operations or the output standard, as well as the date of submission of the application.<\/p>\n

Minister Anton Refalo said that this initiative continues to build on the Government’s commitment to ensuring that agricultural land is used in the most efficient and productive way. He stressed that this scheme offers a concrete opportunity to farmers and youth to expand their operations, while contributing to food security and a more sustainable and ecological agricultural sector.<\/p>\n
