This achievement marks a significant national milestone in environmental protection and resource recovery.

The milestone reflects the continued strengthening of GreenPak’s nationwide battery collection system, ensuring that recycling remains simple, safe, and accessible for everyone. Strong participation has been recorded across schools, supermarkets, local councils, stationeries, retail outlets, and businesses, highlighting a growing commitment to responsible waste disposal across Malta and Gozo.

Despite their small size, portable batteries contain hazardous substances, making proper collection and recycling essential for protecting the environment and supporting sustainable resource use. The recycling of 116 tonnes of batteries has generated environmental benefits equivalent to avoiding approximately 18.1 tonnes of CO2 emissions and planting over 295 trees.

This achievement also forms part of GreenPak’s ongoing “Batteries for Hospice” campaign, which links environmental responsibility with social impact. Through this initiative, used battery collection contributes to supporting Hospice Malta, reinforcing the importance of community engagement alongside environmental action. To date, the sum of €22,000 has been donated to Hospice Malta through this campaign.

GreenPak operates an extensive network of over 1,000 battery collection points across Malta and Gozo, making it easy for the public to dispose of used batteries safely. Collection locations can be found by visiting batterybin.mt.
With millions of batteries placed on the Maltese market each year, diverting this waste from landfill remains a critical priority. GreenPak encourages the public to continue making use of its collection system and to play an active role in safeguarding Malta’s environment for future generations, while contributing to a more circular and sustainable economy.

Source: Greenpak

Image: Greenpak

<g transform="translate(0,332) scale(0.1,-0.1)" fill="" stroke="none"></g>

GreenPak Cooperative Society, Malta’s Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) for battery collection and recycling, has successfully exported 116 tonnes (116,000 kg) of waste portable batteries for recycling—equivalent to approximately 6 million batteries.
