\u00a0The Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights has launched for public consultation the White Paper on the National Agricultural Policy for Malta, a strategic document that sets out a long-term vision for the development of the Maltese agricultural sector for the period 2027\u20132037.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The document presents a comprehensive framework of reforms and actions aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector in Malta, including by addressing the limitation and fragmentation of agricultural land, generational continuity and the need for greater sustainability in the use of natural resources.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The White Paper focuses on six key strategic areas: the protection of agricultural land, the differentiation and professionalisation of the sector, generational renewal, resilience to water, energy and climate, a stronger market orientation as well as modern and effective governance and administrative efficiency.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Minister Anton Refalo said that agriculture in Malta is not just an economic sector, but a fundamental part of the national identity and heritage.<\/span><\/span> He stressed that despite the challenges, Maltese and Gozitan farmers have shown resilience and continued commitment, and therefore the Government is committed to offering a clear, fair and sustainable policy framework that safeguards the future of the sector.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Minister Refalo stressed the importance of protecting agricultural land so that the land continues to be used for its original purpose.<\/span><\/span> He added that investment will continue in technology, innovation and better market access for local products, while also supporting fair income for farmers.<\/span><\/span> He also stressed that generational renewal and attracting more young people to the sector are essential so that Maltese agriculture remains sustainable and viable over the long term.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Minister Refalo also officially opened the seminar on tools and regulations for the protection of agricultural land, an event that saw the participation of representatives from five Member States of the European Union.<\/span><\/span> The seminar clearly demonstrated that our country\u2019s commitment to protecting agricultural land is aligned with a common European goal, and that our country will also look to the best practices of partner countries in order to adopt effective instruments that ensure that agricultural land continues to be used for its agricultural purposes and continues to be protected for future generations.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The consultation on the White Paper will remain open for seven weeks, in order to provide space for contributions, proposals and feedback from farmers, experts and all stakeholders.<\/span><\/span> This is so that the final policy is built on the reality and experience of the sector.<\/span><\/span> The Ministry encourages everyone to actively participate in this process, with the aim of jointly building a strong national vision for the future of agriculture in Malta.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
