The meeting focused on a number of important topics aimed at further strengthening justice and the protection of fundamental rights within the European Union.

The agenda opened with a discussion on the dignity and protection of adults in situations of vulnerability. Minister Attard reiterated that “Malta welcomes this Regulation, while at the same time calling for the EU to be more ambitious and to reflect the developments that have taken place since the adoption of the 2000 Hague Convention on the Protection of Adults.” The objectives of this proposal are to strengthen the autonomy, dignity, and protection of adults in vulnerable situations. The Minister reaffirmed Malta’s commitment that, as negotiations with the European Parliament commence, Malta will continue to offer its constructive support with the aim of reaching an agreement on a Regulation that provides added value and truly strengthens the autonomy of such individuals.

The Minister also intervened during the meeting to acknowledge the concrete and practical steps being taken to further enhance awareness and implementation of the Charter of Fundamental Rights at the policy making stage. He stressed that “Malta welcomes the fact that these rights must be taken seriously at all relevant stages, as we continue developing policy, always in line with national arrangements and processes.” This approach is also reflected in the various rights introduced through the reforms carried out during this legislature.

The Council also saw an exchange between Member States on coordinated EU-level efforts against organised criminal activity originating from or linked to prisons. Discussions were also held on the need for continued efforts in support of the operation of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression, as well as on EU work concerning the regulation of the lawyers’ role within the judicial system.

Photo: MJR

<g transform="translate(0,332) scale(0.1,-0.1)" fill="" stroke="none"></g>

The Minister for Justice and Construction Sector Reform, Jonathan Attard attended and participated in the meeting of the Justice Ministers of the European Union held in Brussels.
