Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett, together with Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said, announced the commencement of Dredging works in Marsaxlokk with the aim of enhancing the safety and access of the port.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Marsaxlokk is the largest traditional fishing village in Malta and plays a crucial role in this sector.<\/span><\/span> Over the years, the accumulation of stones in the fairway of the port has created difficulties for the entry and exit of fishing vessels.<\/span><\/span> These works will improve access for both small and larger vessels to have easier entry and exit from the port.<\/span><\/span> This reduces the risk of vessels hitting the seabed, improves manoeuvrability, particularly during storms, and provides safer conditions for moorings.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Minister Chris Bonett explained that this work is necessary for fishermen to be able to access the port with their boats safely.<\/span><\/span> \u201cFor several years, fishermen have had to face damage due to material that has collected on the seabed and which has begun to cause damage and affect their boats. Through the dredging that we will carry out on the seabed, we will clean up this fairway that is so important for this sector,” explained Minister Bonett.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Minister went on to explain that the sand that will be collected from the seabed will be used in another area in Marsaxlokk to enlarge G\u0127ar A\u0127mar bay, so that this work is not only done in a sustainable manner but also leaves a positive impact on the Xlukkajri in another popular area of \u200b\u200bMarsaxlokk.<\/span><\/span><\/span> \u201cWe are carrying out this project after a discussion with the fishermen where we understood their challenges and thus we are taking action to improve their operations,\u201d concluded Minister Bonett.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said stressed that this project is the result of extensive consultation and coordination with the fishermen and the authorities concerned.<\/span><\/span> \u201cThis project is an important investment in the fishing sector and for our fishermen who use the Port of Marsaxlokk. We have listened to their concerns after they were also experiencing damage, especially regarding safety and temporary relocation during the works, and we have ensured that all necessary measures are taken so that their operations do not stop and they can continue their work without hindrance.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to improving access, the works will help to reduce damage caused by ropes, chains and fishing gear, ultimately leading to a reduction in maintenance costs for fishermen.<\/span><\/span> This will also facilitate smoother day-to-day operations, including logistics related to fish sales, especially for the Sunday market, local restaurants and exports.<\/span><\/span> This project demonstrates the Government\u2019s continued commitment to investing in essential infrastructure, strengthening collaboration with fishermen, and ensuring a safer and more sustainable future for the fishing community in Marsaxlokk.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
