Social partners welcome updated Malta Vision 2050 macro initiatives<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Measurable targets and enhanced accountability<\/strong><\/p>\n

In another positive meeting with the social partners on Malta Vision 2050, the list of 100 macro initiatives, forming part of the updated Vision document were presented and well received. Malta Vision 2050 is set to be launched in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

During its first meeting for 2026, under the leadership of the new Chairperson Maria Micallef, the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) discussed the updated macro initiatives, as the Malta Vision 2050 process has now entered its final phase of consolidation and finalisation. The social partners were given the opportunity to analyze carefully all the indicators and measures.<\/p>\n

The representatives of the constituted bodies had words of praise for the professional way this process was conducted and maintained that such initiative, long needed and much awaited, was also advocated for by the same members. They also expressed their appreciation for the extensive consultation carried out with all strata of Maltese society, as well as for the fact that many of their suggestions were included, so that the Vision can be truly positioned as a national vision. This meeting followed four other meetings, held by MCESD since the launch of the process in October 2024.<\/p>\n

They also noted that this will be the first time that the Maltese Government is proposing this level of accountability, since each measure is linked to an indicator, with the public able to track live progress on the measure.<\/p>\n

The Head of the Secretariat at the Office of the Prime Minister, Colonel Dr Mark Mallia, explained that throughout the entire process, Government worked closely with the social partners: “We explained in detail the indicators and macro-measures that make up this Vision and which will be accessible to the public through a digital platform. Malta Vision 2050 will be a living document that will adapt from time to time -according to the country’s circumstances,” Dr Mallia explained.<\/p>\n

The Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri expressed satisfaction at the fact that the process initiated by the Ministry is now nearing finalisation: “This was a process that led all social partners to agree on a single, unique document on where we would like to take our country, demonstrating political maturity and confidence in the way this process was led.”<\/p>\n

The Permanent Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister responsible for Malta Vision 2050 Ronald Mizzi provided a comprehensive update on the work carried out since the document was made available for public consultation in April 2025 – noting that the governance of this project has recently been further strengthened through the establishment of a Steering Committee overseeing the work and continuity of this exercise. “As a result of the extensive consultation, we continued to refine the document and introduced new measures. The indicators (KPIs) and macro-measures will guide us through the first ten years, up to 2035, but are oriented towards where we would like to take this country by 2050,” Mr Mizzi explained.<\/p>\n

Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue, Andy Ellul recalled that the social partners were participants in the process related to Malta Vision 2050 from the very beginning, and now they are seeing the results of their work in this same inclusive process. ” We now need to look ahead towards delivering practical measures listed in the Vision – including strengthening family friendly practices like parental leave, paternity leave, and the upcoming discussion about remote working and the Right to Disconnect – for which we need the cooperation of both unions and employers”.<\/p>\n

Chairperson Maria Micallef expressed her satisfaction that this matter was the main agenda item of her first meeting of the Council. “In the coming days, a dedicated Task Force will be convened in order to analyze in greater depth the list of measures and proposals, with the aim of continuing providing feedback on the measures of the Malta Vision 2050.”<\/p>\n
