A major upgrade to the Msida distribution centre is currently underway, supported by an investment. This investment of \u20ac9 million is aimed at significantly strengthening Malta\u2019s electricity distribution network.<\/p>\n

The project was discussed during an on-site visit by the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli, together with Enemalta Executive Chairperson In\u0121 Ryan Fava.<\/p>\n

The Msida Distribution Centre plays a critical role in the national electricity system, supplying power to key strategic locations including Mater Dei Hospital, the University of Malta, and surrounding localities such as Swatar, Birkirkara, and San \u0120wann.<\/p>\n

Minister Miriam Dalli stated that this project goes hand-in-hand with Government\u2019s long-term, nine-year plan to reinforce and modernise Malta\u2019s electricity distribution infrastructure. She explained that the works at Msida are focused on strengthening the electricity network and doubling capacity. The \u20ac9 million investment will ensure that one of the country\u2019s most important distribution centres is equipped to meet both current and future demand.<\/p>\n

Enemalta Executive Chairperson Ing. Ryan Fava highlighted that the project is partly financed through European Union funds and involves a complete overhaul of the existing infrastructure. Switchgear that is almost 40 years old is being replaced with modern equipment, while the existing 15MVA transformers will be upgraded to 30MVA units. This will double the centre\u2019s overall capacity from 30MVA to 60MVA.<\/p>\n

The project also includes the replacement of old 11kV, 33kV, and auxiliary equipment. These upgrades, which make part of Enemalta\u2019s 9-year plan, will further strengthen electricity distribution across Malta and Gozo, contributing to a more robust, efficient, and future-ready energy system.<\/p>\n
