Mature trees to be planted and carob and olive trees to be preserved <\/strong><\/p>\n

A developable plot of land in Triq Nerik Xerri in Kirkop, is set to be transformed into a vibrant community garden for families and children, bringing new life to urban space, that could have been built.<\/p>\n

The project will turn a 1,600m\u00b2 site \u2013 once earmarked for development \u2013 into a peaceful ecological haven. This was announced by Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli during a visit to ongoing works together with the Project Green team and members of the Kirkop local council including mayor Matthew Agius Zammit.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll around the country, we are creating spaces for families and children. We are transforming space into green gardens, highlighting our belief that spaces belong to the people. It reflects our commitment to greener areas and a future where every community has access to sustainable and recreational environments. Central to our work is giving families a place to connect with nature, children a place to play and learn, and the community a shared space built around wellbeing and sustainability,\u201d Minister Miriam Dalli said.<\/p>\n

The new garden will feature interactive and educational spaces designed especially for young people and families, including treehouses, play zones, aromatic herb areas, and structures supporting pollination such as insect and bug hotels. All pathways will be built from recyclable materials. More than 55 mature trees will be planted to strengthen biodiversity and enhance the ecological balance, while existing indigenous trees — including carob and olive — will be fully preserved.<\/p>\n

The garden is being developed with sustainability at its core. An automatic irrigation system will be powered through a newly constructed 110-cubic-metre water reservoir on-site, ensuring efficient water use. Solar-powered systems will support essential electrical installations throughout the space.<\/p>\n

Significant progress has already been achieved, including the completion of major structural wall works and the construction of the reservoir.<\/p>\n

Dylan Abela Spiteri, Project Manager for this project stated, \u201cProject Green is advancing a range of initiatives that embrace sustainability and accessibility. Our vision goes beyond simply creating an open space, we aim to establish a vibrant community hub where people can come together.\u201d<\/p>\n
