The Ministry for Environment, through Project Green, has created an accessible park in the outdoor area at A\u0121enzija Sapport\u2019s Day Services Centre in Paola.<\/p>\n
The new garden, names \u0120nien Zaylen in memory of a child who tragically lost his life, creates a new inclusive and therapeutic green space.<\/p>\n
Inaugurated by Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli and Minister for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector Julia Farrugia, \u0120nien Zaylen was opened in the presence of Zaylen\u2019s family, Project Green, A\u0121enzija Sapport, the Paola Local Council, and members of the community.<\/p>\n
Developed in close collaboration with A\u0121enzija Sapport, the redesigned garden spanning around 5,000 sqm reflects a shared commitment to social inclusion and environmental care.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is another project that encompasses what our work is all about: creating spaces that nurture people. By transforming this garden, we are enhancing a public green area and supporting dignity and inclusion. It is a clear example of how we will continue working to build stronger, more compassionate communities. Ultimately, it is also our way of commemorating Zaylen with a living space,\u201d Minister Miriam Dalli said.<\/p>\n
Minister Julia Farrugia emphasised that \u0120nien Zaylen conveys a message of respect, inclusion, and hope. \u201cThis garden represents a space of peace, care, and love, where everyone can feel welcome,\u201d said Minister Farrugia. She also explained the project demonstrates the Government\u2019s commitment to continuing the implementation of Malta\u2019s National Autism Strategy 2021\u20132030, which promotes the development of inclusive, therapeutic and adaptive environments. \u0120nien Zaylen offers an accessible sensory experience to support visitors with different abilities, including those attending A\u0121enzija Sapport\u2019s Centre in Paola. It features recreational elements and social interaction areas that enhance mobility and coordination for persons with disabilities.<\/p>\n
Zaylen\u2019s mother, Francesca Borg, delivered a heartfelt message to raise awareness about children on the autism spectrum and to encourage parents of these children not to lose hope or focus on negativity. Mrs. Borg thanked the Ministers and entities involved in this project and urged everyone to experience and enjoy this garden.<\/p>\n
Through an agreement with A\u0121enzija Sapport, Project Green reimagined what was once a simple peripheral space into a welcoming public environment that invites discovery and interaction. A new independent entrance now provides direct access to the garden, guiding visitors along landscaped pathways that encourage movement and connection with nature.<\/p>\n
Extensive landscaping works were carried out, including the planting of a diverse mix of trees, shrubs, and plant species to create a rich ecological setting. The garden is supported by a newly installed irrigation system connected to a restored underground reservoir, ensuring long-term sustainability and responsible water use. The space has also been enhanced with interactive playground equipment designed to promote active play and sensory development for users of all abilities.<\/p>\n
Raised planter beds were installed for accessible gardening, planter benches for sensory grounding, and quiet zones designed for relaxation and emotional regulation. Sensory pathways, aromatic plants, and natural textures further enrich the therapeutic experience.<\/p>\n
Recreational features include an accessible Bocci pitch, creating opportunities for skill-building and inclusive sport. The existing basketball court has also been upgraded to encourage shared use between service users and the wider community, fostering greater social interaction.<\/p>\n
\u0120nien Zaylen will be accessible to the general public on weekdays between 12:30 and 18:00, and on weekends between 7:00 and 18:00, all year round.<\/p>\n
