This project will see the expansion of the network by around 2 kilometres of new infrastructure, linking Wied iż-Żurrieq to the sewage network in Żurrieq. Thus, 75% of the trenching works are now complete, while the most intensive phase remains, during which the Corporation will be installing the main pipelines and the drainage and water services in the heart of Wied iż-Żurrieq. Construction will also begin on the two drainage pumping stations, which will be equipped with sensors and advanced electronic equipment for preventive maintenance.

“We are delivering a modern service that will strengthen the quality of infrastructure while at the same time protecting the environment in this area. This project demonstrates how investment in infrastructure is closely tied to technology and sustainability. While ensuring that residents have efficient and safe services that reduce daily inconvenience, we are also demonstrating our commitment to a stronger sewer network. This is a clear example of how a well-planned project can improve the lives of people in the community and those who visit it,” said Minister Dalli.

Works are being carried out throughout the day and night, in full coordination with the Wied iż-Żurrieq community, so that the project can be completed before the summer.

This investment will eliminate the need for private cesspits, which until now were the only solution in Wied iż-Żurrieq. Once completed, the project will provide a modern and reliable sewer service while safeguarding the surrounding environment.

WSC Chief Executive Officer Karl Cilia emphasised the effective coordination between the Corporation’s technical teams and the local community. “Our teams are working continuously to reach the target before summer. The project includes two pumping stations that will transport sewage from Wied iż-Żurrieq to the Żurrieq network. Once completed, the area will be equipped with intelligent sensors that monitor sewage flow and levels in real time,” explained Mr Cilia.

These sensors will send automatic alerts to the Corporation’s central control room and, in the event of any anomalies, Corporation workers will be able to intervene as quickly as possible to avoid blockages or overflow in the system.

The project also includes the upgrading and reinforcement of the potable water network, to ensure that all services are renewed and modernised before the road surface is restored. This is a project which, in its entirety, will serve the community for decades to come.

Minister Dalli thanked the teams and the Wied iż-Żurrieq community for their cooperation throughout the works.

Photo: MEEC

<i class="pvc-stats-icon
