In London Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Dr Ian Borg met with Rt Hon Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom, to discuss bilateral relations and international developments of mutual concern.<\/p>\n

Dr Borg reaffirmed Malta\u2019s appreciation for the long-standing friendship and strong bilateral relationship with the United Kingdom, underpinned by deep historical, cultural and family ties. He noted that \u201cthe relationship with the United Kingdom remains crucial to Malta\u2019s international policy and bilateral relations – particularly in areas such as trade, health, security, and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n

Regional issues were also high on the agenda, including the situation in Ukraine, the Middle East peace process, and Libya. Dr Borg underlined Malta\u2019s commitment to promoting dialogue and peace in the Middle East and reiterated Malta\u2019s recognition of the State of Palestine, as part of its steadfast support for a two-state solution. He also reaffirmed Malta\u2019s ongoing support for Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and the need for accountability for violations of international law.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere in London, I met with Foreign Secretary Cooper where we discussed multiple themes, particularly Ukraine, the Middle East, and Malta\u2019s recognition of the State of Palestine, as well as how we can continue working to maintain peace and ensure a situation where both states, Israel and Palestine, live side by side in security and mutual respect,\u201d said Dr Borg.<\/p>\n

The two ministers also emphasised the importance of maintaining focus on Libya and the Mediterranean region, areas of strategic significance for both Malta and the European Union.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming Malta\u2019s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the United Kingdom across all levels – political, economic, cultural, and people-to-people, within both bilateral and multilateral frameworks.<\/p>\n
