At Boiler Wharf in Senglea, the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, together with the Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Government, announced that this area will begin to open to the public between 6pm and 6am. The car park, which can accommodate approximately 35 cars, will be accessible after the necessary arrangements were made by Transport Malta and Senglea Local Council as part of the Reshaping Our Mobility plan, with the aim of better using spaces and car parks of government entities in urban areas and at alternative times.<\/p>\n

Transport Minister Chris Bonett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Chris Bonett, also announced various measures, financial grants and schemes to encourage the use of clean, sustainable and efficient transport. He said that the cultural change in the way we travel does not happen by chance, but with direct incentives and investment in infrastructure. \u201cThe schemes for electric vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and other alternative means will remain in force while we are introducing a new scheme for the regularisation of licence arrears that fairly gives the owners of these vehicles an opportunity to regularise themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, pointed out that through this collaboration between the Senglea Local Council and Transport Malta, the parking problem is being reduced for both residents and visitors to this locality, even at weekends. Zerafa Civelli stressed that local councils are being instrumental in improving the standard of living of residents and in making localities more sustainable.<\/p>\n

Financial Grants and Other Schemes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Transport Malta will continue to accept applications until the end of December for the purchase of new electric vehicles, including petrol-powered motorcycles. In addition, in 2026 the following grants will be available to the public:<\/p>\n

Grants on New Electric Vehicles and Motorcycles<\/p>\n

    \n
  • \u20ac500 for pedelecs (electric motor-assisted bicycles)<\/li>\n
  • \u20ac2,000 to \u20ac6,000 for electric motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles<\/li>\n
  • \u20ac8,000 for cars and vans worth less than \u20ac40,000<\/li>\n
  • \u20ac6,000 for cars and vans worth between \u20ac40,000 and \u20ac100,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Scrapping scheme<\/p>\n

      \n
    • \u20ac500 on scrapping a motorbike<\/li>\n
    • \u20ac1,000 on scrapping a car<\/li>\n
    • Additional \u20ac1,000 for scrapping vehicles registered in Gozo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Other Schemes<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Scheme for the purchase of pedelecs, petrol motorcycles and e-kick scooters<\/li>\n
      • Full VAT refund on bicycles and electric bikes<\/li>\n
      • Scheme for wheelchair accessible vehicles used for the carriage of passengers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Reduction in Registration Taxes and Annual License Fees<\/p>\n

          \n
        • From 1 January 2026, motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of up to 350cc will be exempt from registration tax and their annual license will be reduced to \u20ac25 per year.<\/li>\n
        • Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles with an electric range of more than 50km will remain exempt from registration tax and road licence fees for 5 years from the date of registration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Vehicle Licence Arrears Regularisation Scheme<\/strong><\/p>\n

          Transport Malta will offer this scheme which applies to vehicle owners who have scrapped, garaged, exported, or transferred vehicles without officially notifying Transport Malta. It provides an opportunity for vehicle owners with outstanding payments to regularise their situation by paying their remaining outstanding bills.<\/p>\n

          This scheme also covers cases such as:<\/p>\n

            \n
          • Vehicles of deceased owners and\/or where the inheritance was not accepted<\/li>\n
          • Individuals who are in institutions, hospitals or homes and cannot sign the process<\/li>\n
          • Vehicles registered under companies that have been liquidated or are no longer registered<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
