{"id":52896,"date":"2025-11-03T17:27:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T16:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/livenewsmalta.com\/?p=52896"},"modified":"2025-11-03T17:27:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T16:27:18","slug":"eu-trade-agreements-accelerate-eu-export-growth-and-support-diversification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/livenewsmalta.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/03\/eu-trade-agreements-accelerate-eu-export-growth-and-support-diversification\/","title":{"rendered":"EU trade agreements accelerate EU export growth and support diversification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the fifth Annual Report on Implementation and Enforcement of EU Trade Policy published today, the EU&#8217;s large network of trade agreements helps companies find alternative markets for their exports, while reducing dependencies in a challenging geopolitical environment.<\/p>\n<p>The report, covering 2024 and the first half of 2025, concludes that EU trade agreements increase the\u00a0<strong>resilience\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>competitiveness\u00a0<\/strong>of EU economic operators:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2024,\u00a0<strong>goods exports<\/strong>\u00a0to the EU&#8217;s 76 preferential trade partners grew twice as much as exports to countries not covered by a free trade agreement (FTA) \u2013 1.4% vs 0.7%. For example, EU exports to\u00a0<strong>Canada\u00a0<\/strong>have increased by 51% since 2017 compared to 20% to the rest of the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Total EU\u00a0<strong>agri-food exports<\/strong>\u00a0hit a new record in 2024, reaching \u20ac235 billion (an increase of 2.8% compared to 2023). Agri-food exports to preferential trade partners, worth \u20ac138 billion, increased by 3.6%, compared to 1.6% with non-FTA partners).<\/li>\n<li>EU\u00a0<strong>trade in services<\/strong>\u00a0with preferential partners has reached \u20ac1.3 trillion. According to the latest figures available (2023), it has increased more than three times as much as trade with non-FTA partners (+4.5% versus +1.2%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>EU trade agreements also support\u00a0<strong>diversification\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>supply chain stability:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exports to some of our key partners such as\u00a0<strong>Mexico,\u00a0Norway,\u00a0Switzerland<\/strong>, and the\u00a0<strong>United Kingdom<\/strong>\u00a0compensated for reduced sales of vehicles, vehicle parts and electrical machinery due to EU sanctions against Russia.<\/li>\n<li>At the same time, increased\u00a0<strong>imports\u00a0<\/strong>of gas and liquefied gas from\u00a0<strong>Algeria<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kazakhstan\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Norway<\/strong>, as well as imports of copper from\u00a0<strong>Chile<\/strong>,\u00a0helped fill the space left by reduced imports from Russia following the sanctions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Preventing and\u00a0<strong>removing trade barriers<\/strong>\u00a0in third countries remains fundamental for growing EU trade. 44 such barriers were removed in 2024 alone. A total of 186 barriers has been removed since the Commission&#8217;s Chief Enforcement Officer was appointed in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover,\u00a0<strong>the EU is actively expanding its network of trade agreements<\/strong>. Two\u00a0new EU preferential agreements entered into force last year \u2013 a free trade agreement with New Zealand, and an Economic Partnership Agreement with Kenya. This brings the total number of EU trade agreements currently in place to 44 (covering 76 preferential trade partners). The Commission also concluded negotiations this year with Indonesia, and proposed agreements with Mercosur and Mexico for adoption by the Council and the European Parliament.
