Works have started on a \u20ac3 million project to connect Wied i\u017c-\u017burrieq to the national drainage network for the very first time. This project will provide residents and businesses with a reliable service while safeguarding the surrounding environment.<\/p>\n

Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness, Miriam Dalli, emphasised that a complex project is underway to address a long-standing challenge. \u201cWied i\u017c-\u017burrieq was never connected to the national drainage network, meaning residents and businesses did not have access to this service. Through this \u20ac3 million project, we are working on a difficult task that must be carried out to solve an existing problem. Once Wied i\u017c-\u017burrieq is connected to the national system, this connection will ensure that residents and businesses have access to the service, while supporting sustainable growth and protecting the surrounding environment,\u201d said Minister Dalli.<\/p>\n

The Chief Executive of the Water Services Corporation, Karl Cilia, said that the first works have now started on this important project in Wied i\u017c-\u017burrieq to connect the area to the national drainage system. \u201cThis project involves an investment of around \u20ac3 million, with works extending along a 2km stretch of road. Two pumping stations will be installed to transfer drainage from Wied i\u017c-\u017burrieq to our drainage network in \u017burrieq. The first phase of works is expected to last around 10 weeks, with the entire project scheduled to be completed before next summer. This will ensure that the Wied i\u017c-\u017burrieq community is connected to the national drainage network, eliminating the private cesspits of shops and homes that until now were individually responsible for their own systems,\u201d explained Cilia.<\/p>\n

The Water Services Corporation will implement this project as part of its commitment to strengthen Malta\u2019s drainage network. Once completed, Wied i\u017c-\u017burrieq will for the first time be fully connected to the drainage system, ensuring adequate access to services, improving residents\u2019 quality of life, and protecting the natural environment in this popular locality.<\/p>\n

The first phase of the project will cover part of \u017burrieq and is expected to be completed within 10 weeks. To reduce inconvenience, a traffic management plan will be introduced, with works starting from one end and continuing in stages along the road.<\/p>\n

This project in Wied i\u017c-\u017burrieq forms part of a national investment programme to strengthen the drainage infrastructure across Malta and Gozo.<\/p>\n
