Malta has officially launched the Malta Semiconductor Competence Centre (MSCC),\u00a0a major step forward in strengthening the country\u2019s role in Europe\u2019s semiconductor sector.<\/p>\n
The MSCC is a strategic initiative led by Malta Enterprise\u00a0on behalf of the Ministry for Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects\u00a0in collaboration with the University of Malta, MCAST, the Malta Digital Innovation Authority, and Silicon Catalyst\u00a0EU Ltd. The Centre brings together academia, research, and industry to create an ecosystem\u00a0that\u00a0supports innovation,\u00a0develops\u00a0skills, and\u00a0creates\u00a0new opportunities for start-ups.<\/p>\n
Minister for Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri described the MSCC as, \u201cplacing Malta at the heart of Europe\u2019s semiconductor ecosystem. It is not just a centre for technology, but a bridge connecting the talent, ideas, and ambition of our innovators with the wider European network.\u00a0Through this collaboration,\u00a0we are building competitiveness, attracting new opportunities, and ensuring that Maltese workers and businesses can\u00a0continue to succeed\u00a0in the digital age.\u201d<\/p>\n
A key priority for the Centre is preparing the workforce for the fast-growing demands of the semiconductor industry. Through targeted training programmes\u00a0and micro-credential courses, industry-led learning, and research initiatives, the Centre aims to prepare both current professionals and future talent to meet the evolving needs of the global semiconductor industry.<\/p>\n
Through its partnership with Silicon Catalyst EU, the MSCC has also launched the\u00a0ChipStartEU\u00a0programme to support start-ups in chip design. More than 40 companies have already applied, with 12 to be selected for the first cohort. These start-ups will benefit from access to Silicon Catalyst\u2019s global network, helping to turn new ideas into commercial success stories.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0MSCC will also play a vital role in supporting European semiconductor strategies, including the European Chips Act and IPCEI projects. Through alliances with leading organisations such as IMEC, ARM, and the European Network of Competence Centres, Malta is attracting international start-ups and scale-ups that will advance research, development, and innovation locally.<\/p>\n
By hosting major industry events such as the Global Semiconductor Conference\u00a0this November\u00a0and the European Forum for Electronic Components and Systems 2025, Malta is further solidifying its position as a key contributor to Europe\u2019s semiconductor sector.<\/p>\n
The launch of the Malta Semiconductor Competence Centre is more than an infrastructural investment; it represents a vision for the future. \u00a0This vision aligns directly with Malta\u00a0Vision2050, which emphasises sustainable growth, technological advancement, and a resilient economy powered by skilled human capital.<\/p>\n
