Project Green has started works on the Fgura District Park, where an area of almost 50,000 square metres is being regenerated and brought to life.<\/p>\n
Works are ongoing on an area that extends from the football ground in Fgura to San Klement Park in \u017babbar.<\/p>\n
During a site visit, Minister Miriam Dalli said \u201cIn the coming months, we will see a complete transformation, as an abandoned land in the heart of Fgura is brought back to life. For many years, Fgura has suffered from air pollution, and as a government we are determined to strengthen our commitment to provide accessible green spaces within a 10-minute walk. This project will directly benefit around 11,000 residents in Fgura and its surrounding areas, as District Park will be seamlessly connected with San Klement Park in \u017babbar.\u201d<\/p>\n
Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi explained how this project in the heart of Fgura is clear proof of how European funds, together with national funds, are being turned into concrete and sustainable investment for our communities. Through this open space, families will have an accessible and safe environment where they can enjoy leisure time, while also increasing the ecological value of the locality. \u201cAs a government, we will continue to work so that every town and city has quality spaces that offer opportunities for relaxation, social activity and the preservation of the environment for future generations,\u201d concluded Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi.<\/p>\n
An abandoned area, which contained amounts of waste and a lack of maintenance including lack of safety, is now being given life by Project Green through various interventions with an investment of around \u20ac4.2 million. This project will focus on environmental improvement and will incorporate areas for physical activity, pedestrian zones and access for cyclists as well as for people with mobility problems.<\/p>\n
District Park will see the planting of more than 350 new trees which will be watered by two new reservoirs and water management systems.<\/p>\n
Present for this visit were the Project Green team and the Mayor of Fgura, Clayton Cascun Portelli.<\/p>\n
The works began once this land was handed over to the Government, covering from Fgura football ground to San Klement Park in \u017babbar.<\/p>\n
Andrea Saliba, the Project Manager, stated that, \u201cAs with every other project, we consulted the residents and ensured that the project would be welcomed. We are working so that in the coming period, Fgura will enjoy open spaces where children can run in a safe environment, areas for picnics and a place where the elderly can spend some time socialising.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mayor Clayton Cascun Portelli said, \u201cThe progress on the District Park in Fgura is advancing very well. Every day steps are being taken for our vision to become a reality \u2013 a green, safe and beautiful space for all families.\u201d<\/p>\n
This project is being co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.<\/p>\n
