Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, welcomed the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the State of Libya, Taher Al Baour, for bilateral talks in Malta, on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n

The two countries discussed ongoing collaborations across several areas, including migration, trade and EU relations, as well as pressing global issues, including Russia\u2019s aggression in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Deputy Prime Minister Borg thanked Minister Al Baour for the opportunity to exchange views on Libya\u2019s current political challenges. \u201cMalta remains committed to supporting initiatives for peace and stability, prioritising the wellbeing of the Libyan people. We encourage all parties to support the ongoing democratic transitional process and avoid actions that could derail it,\u201d he affirmed.<\/p>\n

Dr Borg also commended the Libyan authorities for its efforts in tackling irregular migration. He affirmed Malta\u2019s readiness to continue providing its support through training opportunities, knowledge-sharing, and other engagement at different levels.<\/p>\n

The two ministers also talked about EU initiatives in Libya and the Mediterranean, including the European Union Border Assistance Mission in Libya, which works to strengthen border security, improve migration management and enhance governance.<\/p>\n

Dr Borg also briefed Minister Al Baour on Malta\u2019s intention to formally recognise the State of Palestine, during the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, later this month. He reiterated Malta\u2019s call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, de-escalation in the wider Middle East region, as well as the unconditional release of all hostages and the removal of all obstacles hindering humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Minister Al Baour thanked Malta for its hospitality, and for its support to the Libyan people. \u201cToday, we are exploring new opportunities for our countries. The historic relations between Malta and Libya are growing stronger, as we look forward to keeping working together in coming years,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
