The General Workers\u2019 Union (GWU) has today\u00a0registered a formal industrial dispute with Carlo Gavazzi Limited. This serious escalation\u00a0comes after the company revealed imminent plans to bring foreign-based employees to\u00a0Malta for a handover of operations, despite no agreement having been reached on a\u00a0redundancy package for the current Maltese workforce.<\/div>\n

The union has condemned this move as an act of bad faith that fundamentally prejudices the\u00a0ongoing negotiations. The company is preparing to transfer the jobs of its long-serving\u00a0Maltese employees to its plants in Mexico and China and is now attempting to use those\u00a0same employees to facilitate the handover before securing their futures.<\/div>\n

David Darmanin, Secretary of the GWU\u2019s Technology, Electronics and Communications\u00a0Section, stated: \u201cIt is frankly insulting that our members, many of whom have given decades\u00a0of loyal service, would be expected to train their own Mexican replacements before Carlo\u00a0Gavazzi has guaranteed them a fair and dignified exit package. The knowledge and skill of\u00a0our members are valuable, and we will not allow them to be exploited while their own futures\u00a0remain uncertain.\u201d<\/div>\n

This dispute is further aggravated by the company’s decision to obstruct the union from\u00a0fulfilling its duty to its members. Management has refused the GWU permission to use the\u00a0designated union notice board to inform employees about assistance with finding alternative\u00a0employment and collecting CVs, a primary method of mitigating the effects of the\u00a0redundancies.<\/div>\n

The GWU has formally reserved all its rights at law and will not hesitate to issue directives\u00a0for industrial action to prevent this handover until a fair agreement is reached. The union\u00a0calls on the company to suspend its handover plans and return to the negotiating table in\u00a0good faith.<\/div>\n
