A new book in the Maltese language has been published that addresses the subject of dementia among the elderly in an educational way, with the aim of helping children relate to this condition from a young age.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Granny\u2019s Dentures Disappear\u2019 tells the story of a grandmother who gradually begins to forget essential things and involves her grandchildren in a smile-inducing adventure, while continuing to raise awareness about this condition.<\/span><\/span> The purpose of the book goes beyond simple reading;<\/span><\/span> it is an educational tool that encourages empathy among children and explains in an appropriate way memory loss, which is often the first sign of dementia.<\/span><\/span> The illustrations in this book continue to bring the characters to life and help the message to get across.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In an informal meeting, the Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Malcolm Paul Agius Galea met with the main actors behind this publication, Natalie Portelli and Dr Alexander Schembri, where he was presented with the book.<\/span><\/span> Dr Agius Galea described the initiative as an important step towards a society that better understands and appreciates its elderly.<\/span><\/span> He remarked, \u201cThis is a beautiful example of how literature can connect generations and help children learn to love and respect the elderly more.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Natalie Portelli is a renowned author in the field of children\u2019s literature, with over 200 books published.<\/span><\/span> With her ability to speak to children in language, she creates characters and stories that bring a smile.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Dr Alexander Schembri, a dentist with extensive experience in the field of gerodontology, has been promoting awareness of the dental and psychosocial needs of the elderly for years.<\/span><\/span> He was the brain behind the first gerodontology book for children in 2017, and is currently President of the Maltese Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
