This momentum continues into 2025, with five additional substations commissioned and ambitious plans to install 10 kilometres of new cables across seven localities including Kerċem, Xagħra, Marsalforn, St. Lawrence, Sannat, Xewkija, and Għarb.

“This substantial investment in Gozo’s energy infrastructure demonstrates our commitment to bolster access to reliable, modern electricity services to residents and businesses in Gozo. These upgrades aim to significantly enhance the resilience of our national grid and reduce service disruptions for the people of Gozo,” Minister Miriam Dalli stated.

Minister Clint Camilleri stated that “this significant investment in Gozo’s electricity infrastructure is clear evidence of the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Gozitan residents. Through more than 10 kilometres of new underground cables and additional substations, we are ensuring that Gozo has a more stable and reliable electricity supply. This is another important step towards strengthening the island’s connectivity and resilience. I thank Enemalta and its team for the extensive work they are carrying out, as well as the Ministry for Energy for their ongoing collaboration on this vital project for Gozo.”

The ministers also visited Enemalta’s offices in Xewkija to meet staff contributing to the upgrade of the island’s energy distribution network.

Currently, Enemalta is installing 11-kilovolt underground cables in Żebbuġ (Marsalforn) and Victoria as part of the nationwide initiative to enhance connectivity between distribution centres and substations delivering electricity across Malta and Gozo.

The infrastructure upgrades are specifically designed to enhance the capacity, flexibility, and resilience of the national grid, helping to minimise disruptions and ensure faster service restoration when issues occur.

Enemalta Executive Chairman Eng. Ryan Fava emphasised the significance of the project, noting that “the addition of 10 kilometres of underground cables strengthens our network, improving its reliability and ensuring more robust energy delivery”. He also expressed appreciation to the Ministry for Gozo and local councils for their ongoing cooperation in facilitating the works.

Photo: MEEC/MGP

<g transform="translate(0,332) scale(0.1,-0.1)" fill="" stroke="none"></g>

The government is investing significantly in strengthening Gozo’s electricity infrastructure, with over 10 kilometres of new underground cables being installed across the island as part of a comprehensive upgrade to boost service reliability and capacity.
