During the summer months, 25 cultural activities will be organised by local councils across Malta and Gozo. These will be carried out through a funding scheme issued by the Directorate for Local Government. This was announced by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli and the Director General of the Local Government Division Emil Vassallo.<\/p>\n
It was explained that the amount of funds allocated to local councils, in order to carry out these activities, is around half a million euros. The activities will vary from summer nights, agricultural exhibitions, and other activities linked to the attractions of the respective localities.<\/p>\n
Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli said that these activities are the first set of activities that have been announced, as more activities will be launched in different localities in the coming time. She explained that there is a full programme of activities until the end of this year and that all of them will be carried out through funds from this scheme.<\/p>\n
“Over the past few years we have seen that Regional and Local Councils have sufficient funds to keep their localities alive through various activities. In fact, throughout the year we are issuing a good number of schemes so that we have a number of seasonal activities, linked among others to Christmas, Easter and Summer. This is part of the Government’s strategy to keep communities alive through quality activities,” said the parliamentary secretary.<\/p>\n
She reiterated that apart from funds to carry out the necessary maintenance and improve the infrastructure of localities, the Government is also providing the necessary tools so that life in communities is also active, and that local families, people from outside the locality and even tourists visiting our country can enjoy it.<\/p>\n
Director General Emil Vassallo explained that in this first set of activities there are 18 Maltese Local Councils and 7 Gozitan Local Councils that will benefit from the funds. He noted with satisfaction that there was strong competition also from localities where culture is not as popular as older localities.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the announced activities will be held in these localities; Attard, Mellieha, San Gwann, Birkirkara, Gzira, Gharghur, Iklin, Sliema, Ta’ Xbiex, Kalkara, Xgajra, Luqa, Marsaxlokk, Santa Venera, Mdina, Dingli, Kirkop and Zurrieq. While those in Gozo will be held in G\u0127ajnsielem, Ta’ Ker\u010bem and Santa Lu\u010bija, Qala, Ta’ Sannat, Xag\u0127ra, Xewkija and \u017bebbu\u0121.<\/p>\n
