Mayors, deputy mayors and councillors in Malta and Gozo will see an increase of \u20ac1000 in their allowances.<\/span><\/span> This was announced during a visit by the Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, and the Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, to the offices of the Northern Region following renovation work.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n

The increase in allowances for Mayors, Deputy Mayors and Councillors will be given to cover the costs associated with the performance of their duties.<\/span><\/span> In addition to the allowance, mayors and presidents of regional councils are also paid an honorarium that varies according to the size of the council.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
Minister Owen Bonnici said, \u201cThis increase in allowances is a concrete recognition of the work done by our mayors, deputy mayors and councillors in Malta and Gozo. They give much of their time and energy to serve their communities, in many cases, with dedication.\u201d<\/span><\/span> \u201cThis measure not only recognises their efforts but also supports them to continue to provide a better service to residents. Investment in local government means a direct investment in the quality of life of citizens,\u201d concluded Minister Bonnici.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Parliamentary Secretary, Alison Zerafa Civelli explained that through this increase, mayors, deputy mayors and councillors will be receiving around \u20ac1,000 more per year.<\/span><\/span> \u201cWe are doing this because we believe that those elected are providing a valuable service, while dedicating much of their time to the locality and community they come from. We all know that the work of both Mayors and Councillors goes beyond meeting time alone, and therefore this increase is an appreciation for all Mayors and Councillors,\u201d said Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
