Minister for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector, Jonathan Attard, convened a number of legal professionals working in the arbitration sector to discuss the potential of our country in international arbitration.
Minister Attard initiated the discussion by speaking about the possibility of developing international arbitration into a new economic niche for Malta.
“The knowledge, experience, and skills of legal professionals in Malta should be the driving force behind this development, ensuring that our country remains relevant, effective, and attractive to international users,” stated Minister Attard, while expressing the Government’s commitment to supporting the industry, both from a promotional perspective and in terms of the necessary investment.
Among the topics discussed were the need for stronger infrastructure, increased efficiency in arbitration processes, updates to arbitration procedures, and how these can continue to improve and attract various sectors to choose Malta as a destination for international arbitration for cases from strategic sectors such as Maritime, Aviation, Online Gaming, Construction, Financial Services, Technology and Innovation, E-commerce, Energy, and Sustainability.
The professionals expressed strong interest in joining this project and contributing to the development of the International Business Arbitration Centre.
They highlighted the importance of a client-focused approach, delivering efficient and competitive services that meet the highest international standards. They put forward various ideas and recommendations on governance, procedures, and the centre’s international promotion, aiming to establish Malta as a premier destination for commercial and business arbitration in the Mediterranean region.
“I believe that together we can create a center of excellence that will not only benefit the legal profession but also the Maltese economy as a whole,” concluded Dr Attard.
Among those present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector, Johan Galea, the Chairman of the Arbitration Centre, Dr Paul Cachia, and the Registrar, Dr Fiona Galea Farrugia.
