Eight people have been arrested in connection with the theft of drugs from the AFM barracks in Safi.

Addressing a conference at the Police Depot, Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà said an extensive operation by officers began late on Monday night and continued until Tuesday afternoon.

Four people were the first to be arrested at an apartment in Zebbug following the discovery of 36kg of cannabis resin in a vehicle belonging to the individuals.

Shortly afterwards a person was arrested in Marsa, while police found a further 34kg of cannabis resin  inside a Ħaż-Żabbar garage.

The police continued to move swiftly as a suspect was arrested in Qormi along with 10kg of cannabis resin found hidden in a San Gwann field.

Another raid in Qormi led to police detaining a further two suspects. Officers uncovered

5kg of cannabis resin belonging to the arrested individuals at a Pietà residence.

The drugs were stolen sometime between Saturday and Sunday from a sealed container held at the Safi Army barracks.

The theft of the drugs, part of a larger haul of drugs seized in June, 2024, shocked the country and led to the AFM commander Clinton O’Neill being suspended. Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri offered his resignation, which Prime Minister Robert Abela did not accept.

Commissioner Anglo Gafa did not give any further details about the suspects or the ongoing police investigation.
