New Therapeutic Farm in St. Vincent de Paul

In St. Vincent de Paul, Razzett l-Hena, an innovative therapeutic farm project that provides a relaxing space for residents, their families and visitors to spend time relaxing and interacting with animals, was officially inaugurated. This project was made possible with an investment of €700,000 as part of a Budget measure that promotes therapeutic and inter-generational activities among the elderly.

Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela said that this will be a place where residents of St. Vincent can spend time with their loved ones, and thus we will be promoting more intergenerational activities among others. The therapeutic capacity that animals have has long been recognized and in fact, the minister stressed that studies have also shown that hugging and gestures of affection and love towards animals help a lot to calm and relax humans. Therapy can also help people with dementia to be more able to communicate.

“Through this project, with an investment of around €700,000, part of another promise in favour of elderly care is being fulfilled,” concluded Minister Jo Etienne Abela.

Parliamentary Secretary Malcolm Paul Agius Galea stressed that this project is more than a relaxation space, but a concrete form of therapy that helps to improve the mental and emotional health of the elderly. “With more therapy spaces, more community services and more investment in infrastructure, we are ensuring that our elderly not only receive the best care, but also have a life that continues to be active and full of satisfaction,” concluded the parliamentary secretary.

Animal therapy has long been a part of the care of residents at St. Vincent de Paul, with regular sessions delivered by professional animal handlers. To strengthen this initiative, a previously unused area has been transformed into a farm that offers a safe and nurturing environment for those who use it. Seniors visiting this space can interact with animals such as a mare, donkey, goat, sheep, rabbits, geese, and birds, all in specially equipped rooms.

This initiative is designed to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while helping people with dementia communicate better and experience moments of reminiscence. In addition, the farm also offers a play area for children, creating an environment where families can spend quality time together with their elderly.

During this project, renovations were also carried out at the cat café located next to the farm.

This project continues to strengthen the commitment to providing the elderly at St. Vincent de Paul with innovative services that improve their well-being, in a safe environment that offers peace of mind and positive interaction with the rest of the community.
