Investment in Naxxar Reservoir supporting 9 localities

Energy Minister Miriam Dalli

Renovation works are ongoing at the Naxxar Reservoir; a crucial step in enhancing Malta’s water infrastructure. The Naxxar Reservoir, with a capacity of 24,185 m³, is a medium-sized reservoir that supplies potable water to Naxxar, Mosta, St. Paul’s Bay, Għargħur, Madliena, Ibraġġ, San Ġwann, Birkirkara, and Iklin, and will also support the locality of Mellieħa in the future.

Renovation works include addressing leaks, replacing the roof and supporting columns, enlarging the exit pipework, and installing solar panels with a capacity of 600kWp on the reservoir roof.

During a site visit by Energy Minister Miriam Dalli and Water Services Corporation (WSC) CEO Karl Cilia, it was discussed how this critical project, with an investment of €3 million, is part of a broader initiative under the National Investment Plan (NIP) to renovate essential assets and reservoirs, including the recently upgraded Luqa and Naval Reservoirs.

Minister Miriam Dalli emphasised how this project promotes accountability and transparency, as well as aiding the transition to a carbon-neutral economy. “Our priority is safeguarding the safety and resilience of Malta’s water supply. By modernising vital infrastructure like the Naxxar Reservoir, we are investing in a sustainable future for generations to come,” she added.

The renovation works on the Naxxar Reservoir, originally built in 1938, began last week and are expected to conclude by mid-March 2025. During this period, the reservoir will be temporarily decommissioned while a retaining wall is constructed to maintain the network’s robustness.

WSC CEO Karl Cilia stated, “We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of water quality and service for our customers. This project underscores our dedication to infrastructure excellence and our proactive stance in securing a sustainable water future for Malta. It also includes the installation of solar panels with a peak capacity of 600kWp on the reservoir roof — further highlighting our commitment to sustainability.”

To ensure the continuity of the water supply, a contingency plan has been established to directly supply the central part of the Island from production lines. This may result in lower water pressure for some customers, but comprehensive measures are in place to maintain water quality. Once the modernisation process is complete, the upgraded reservoir will resume operations, reinforcing Malta’s water infrastructure and ensuring a more efficient supply for surrounding communities.

Historically, the Naxxar Reservoir has served as a critical distribution tank, receiving water from the Wied il-Għasel pumping station. Over the decades, it has been continually updated with modern technology to ensure its key role in Malta’s water supply network remains intact.
