In Budget 2025, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, announced an increase in the Carer at Home scheme subsidy. Those who hire a full-time carer will receive an annual rise in this subsidy from €8,000 to €8,500. The subsidy was raised by €1,000 last year, from €7,000 to €8,000, and this rise builds on previous increase. This plan will require a total investment of €8 million in 2025.
Elderly persons who hire caretakers to help them with their everyday needs might receive financial support through the Carer at Home programme.
This increase will help over 1,100 older people who are currently benefiting from this scheme. It also allows more flexibility for those who employ part-time carers, as the support is adjusted pro-rata, depending on the number of hours worked.
The subsidy is given directly to the beneficiaries, who receive this aid in their bank accounts every month, from the time their application is approved. This process helps the aid arrive efficiently and in a timely manner, while ensuring that every eligible person is given the necessary support.
“This initiative shows the Government’s commitment to continue strengthening services that help the elderly live independent lives in their community,” emphasized Parliamentary Secretary Malcolm Paul Agius Galea.”This scheme allows the elderly to remain in the comfort and familiarity of their homes, while giving peace of mind to family members that their loved ones are under the care of trained and qualified persons,” stated the Parliamentary Secretary.
