A new campaign was launched: “Am I Fit to Drive?” Come Home!” – about the importance of more safety on the roads

Transport Malta has launched a new campaign called “Do I feel good to drive? Asal Id-Dar!”, as the first step in a series of road safety campaigns. This campaign, part of the “Together we can be the solution!” initiative, aims to raise awareness about responsible driving and reduce traffic accidents caused by excessive, careless driving, under the influence of alcohol. alcohol or illicit substances.

This is the first of a series of educational campaigns on road safety, which in the coming time will also include the launch of the Malta Road Safety Code. This initiative will develop throughout the year with a number of activities and messages designed according to the principles of the SAFE System, focusing on aspects such as road users, vehicles, speed, state of roads, and care after accidents.

During the launch, the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works Chris Bonnet emphasized the importance of the campaign where he stressed that while Malta is already among the safest countries in Europe, every life getting lost on the road is a tragedy and should never happen under any circumstances. “This campaign reflects our full commitment to improving road safety through education, enforcement, and more awareness, we are working towards a future with fewer fatal accidents.”

For his part, Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia added, “Road safety is a shared responsibility. Our campaign will focus on educating the public, promoting modern safety technologies, and enforcing the necessary measures to protect everyone who uses our roads, whether drivers of vehicles, cyclists and individuals traveling on foot. Together, we can create a more responsible driving environment and mutual respect on our roads.”

Architect Audrey Demicoli, Director of the Strategy for Integrated Transport, described this campaign as an example of the coordinated work between Transport Malta and the Maltese Council for Road Safety. She emphasized that, “This is the result of discussions and continuous collaboration, where we are working hand in hand to improve safety on our roads. Our commitment remains that of ensuring that every measure is taken in consultation and with scientific knowledge.”

Statistics released by the European Road Safety Observatory during this year show that Malta is among the top three EU countries with the lowest rate of road deaths per million residents. Our country reduced fatalities by 44% in 2024 compared to the previous year, with a rate of 30 fatalities per million residents – well below the EU average of 46. This result shows the ongoing commitment of Transport Malta to improve road safety despite an increase in collisions, a trend that is being seen in other European countries.

The campaign includes key themes, including:

  • Malta Road Code: Knowledge of updates.
  • Safe Speeds and Vehicles: Respect for speed limits.
  • Protection of Vulnerable Road Users: Protection of cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists.
  • Helmet use awareness and incentives for cyclists’ safety.
  • Safety for Children and the Elderly: Specific protection for these vulnerable groups.

This campaign was carried out in collaboration with the Sedqa Agency and the Authority for the Responsible Use of Cannabis.
