Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela looking at ongoing work on new project at Gozo Hospital

The Minister for Health and Active Aging Jo Etienne Abela visited the work that is currently underway in relation to the geotechnical studies for the project to build a new hospital in Gozo.

Minister Abela explained how the Gozo General Hospital redevelopment project reached an important milestone with the start of geotechnical studies on the site. He said how these studies are a critical component of the master planning process, providing essential technical information to guide the design and construction phases of the project.

Abela said that as part of the ambitious development project, the new hospital will have a modern building for acute care, a facility dedicated to rehabilitation, and a larger car park. He reiterated that the phased approach to construction will ensure the continuity of essential medical services throughout the redevelopment.

“This is another promise of the Government that we are seeing its initial phase these days. This project aims to position the Gozo General Hospital as a hub for health care that meets the needs of the community and visitors alike,” concluded Minister Abela.

Engineer James Grima explained how through these geotechnical investigations, the physical and mechanical properties of the soil and rocks will be assessed. This while the same survey offers insight into the ground’s stability, load-bearing capacity, and potential environmental considerations. This information will inform the structural design of the new facilities, ensuring the safety, durability, and efficiency of the planned hospital building.
