Proposals aimed at easing traffic congestion announced

During a news conference, the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett presented and announced a set of proposals aimed at easing traffic congestion.

The minister explained that these proposals are based on six pillars:

  • The first pillar is a 24-hour economy where it has been proposed how services and deliveries are made at off-peak times. The government must lead by example. Accordingly, public services such as waste collection, street cleaning and car license lessons and tests, among others.

Another proposal under this pillar includes a study on the cargo service for Gozo from Freeport, Kordin and Valletta.

  • The second pillar is the incentives to limit the use of vehicles. These incentives are aimed at convincing young people not to acquire a car license and workers to use their private car in off-peak hours.

The Employee Transportation Deduction Act is also revised where the incentive for people who make use of carpooling is reduced from eight to four people.

  • The third pillar is the new park & ​​ride facilities in the heart of the localities to alleviate the parking problem. It is proposed to consider parking in a public space such as for example parking lots in schools. Digital solutions in relation to car parks are also explored.
  • The fourth pillar is public transport. The proposals in this pillar aim to evaluate new and direct routes and review all routes. Among the direct routes include from Park & ​​Ride in Ta’ Qali to Mater Dei Hospital and the University.
  • The fifth pillar is the improvement in the coordination of the works between all the entities concerned and infrastructural projects on the roads. It is also proposed to create a committee to coordinate the infrastructural works and improve communication with the residents.
  • The sixth pillar is ideas for traveling with sustainable modes of transport. These should lead to different modes of transport that are more sustainable and active. A national strategy for walking and cycling will also be launched.

Minister Chris Bonett claimed that “These proposals are part of a chain of proposals that are not only aimed at easing the traffic congestion at the moment but also a long-term vision. We must also look at a technological system where our traffic management is not only human but also digital.”
