In a meeting with the Malta Police Union, Minister Camilleri reiterated the government’s commitment to amending laws concerning cases of violence against the Disciplinary Corps and public officials, with the aim of safeguarding officers who serve Malta and Gozo daily, ensuring they are more secure while performing their duties. He explained that this commitment is reflected in every decision made in this sector, which has always prioritised those wearing the uniform.
The Chairperson of the Malta Police Union, Marlon Hili, expressed the union’s view that the country’s laws should be strengthened to ensure that those who wear the uniform remain respected. He stated that the incident that occurred over the past weekend does not reflect the sentiment of respect towards the Police Corps held by the vast majority of Maltese and Gozitans. He added that in the face of abusive behaviour towards officers, there should be strict laws reflecting the seriousness of the actions committed.
This meeting follows one held last Thursday between Minister Camilleri and the Police Officers’ Union. These meetings will continue in the coming days, leading to amendments being placed on the Parliamentary agenda when Parliament reopens.
