Dame Maggie Smith dies aged 89

Dame Maggie Smith, award winning actress described by peers as being “one of a kind”  has died aged 89.

Her most recent works included Downtown Abbey and Harry Potter franchaise.

As Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, in Downtown Abbey, she was imperious.

She collected a whole new generation of fans playing Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potte movies.

During her long and distinguished career, she received two Oscars and eight Baftas, the first Oscar in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1969.
