The Minister for Health and Active Aging Jo Etienne Abela announced that for the first time in our country, during the past week, the Department of Neurosurgery at Mater Dei Hospital performed the first Transsphenoidal procedure Surgery through endoscopic pituitary surgery by a local team in Malta. This intervention was possible through the investment made in new equipment worth around €700,000, as well as after intensive training.
The minister explained that this first intervention was performed on a 27-year-old patient who was suffering from vision problems. He said how after a number of tests it turned out that the patient’s vision was deteriorating rapidly and therefore he underwent an emergency endoscopic procedure through the nose which resulted in an almost immediate improvement in his vision.
The Minister Jo Etienne Abela also said that this development was possible with a coordinated effort of a team of endocrinologists, surgeons, anesthetists and nurses thanks to whom we have seen successful results through this intervention. The Maltese team was led by Dr Jasmina Djukic and Dr Mark Gruppetta.
“Thanks to this investment and training, Maltese and Gozitan patients will benefit from treatment at Mater Dei Hospital without the need to be sent abroad. I thank the entire team of specialists and nurses for their work,” concluded the minister.
