Transport Malta is taking a series of measures aimed at minimising traffic disruptions and ensuring safer roads for all commuters as the new scholastic year begins next week.
Recognising the increased strain on the road network during this period, Transport Malta has rolled out a coordinated plan to improve traffic flow, enhance public safety, and reduce congestion, particularly around schools during peak hours.
Transport Malta CEO, Kurt Farrugia emphasised, “Our priority is to safeguard the interests of all road users while ensuring that students, parents, and teachers can travel to and from school efficiently and safely. By deploying over 55 enforcement officers, 10 motorcycles, and strengthening our cooperation with local councils, LESA, and the Police, we are committed to mitigating the effects of traffic congestion and ensuring smoother journeys
during peak school hours.”
A key component of this plan is the significant boost in enforcement personnel. Over 55 enforcement officers, supported by 10 motorcycles, will be deployed strategically across key areas to manage traffic and ensure that regulations are enforced. These officers will be present not only in the mornings but also in the afternoons, ensuring coverage during peak school drop-off and pick-up times. This increased presence is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and reduce illegal parking, speeding, and other violations that contribute to congestion.
In addition to the enhanced enforcement, the Authority is working closely with LESA officials and the Malta Police Force to ensure seamless cooperation. Increased patrols across the islands will support these efforts, with a focus on high-traffic areas and school zones to ensure that disruptions are minimised. Transport Malta will also be working closely with the Local Councils, as “no objection” will be requested from the Local Councils for
certain permits that are near schools and during peak traffic hours. New permits will only be issued in areas which will not affect traffic directly while new permits which affect traffic will be issued conditionally for works not to be carried out in critical times of the day.
The Authority will also be offering a free tow truck service during specific times of the day to ensure that the flow of traffic continues without disruption.
The plan will be continuously monitored, and further adjustments will be made as needed to ensure its ongoing success throughout the school year.
